Cannot shut down with SP2 installed

I have installed SP2 onto my P4, 512MB laptop.

Now it does not shut down properly or go into suspend mode.

It gets past the saving settings bit, and then goes to the shutting down
bit. It makes the noise as if the power is switched off but the screen
remains saying shutting down. I then have to press the power button for the
computer to switch off.

When I close the screen, it goes into Standby, but when i reopen the screen
the computer does not come out of standby.

Any suggestions?

System restore solves the problem, but I reinstalled SP2 a second time.

The more I read everyones problems, the more I'm convinced Microsoft need a
FIX on SP2 ASAP.
A temorary solution that I have found is to turn off the standby and
hibernation options. You'll have to manually turn off you laptop but that
beats haveing it crash or reboot several times and/or any of you other
problems. Microsoft will get a fix out when they solve this type of problem.
