Hi, for the past couple of weeks I have been unable to shutdown my PC

Pressing the soft shutdown button, starts the logging off....the
shutting down procedures as normal but although the screen powers off
my pc continues to run and I have to press & hold the power off butto
for the pc to stop running
If I go into hibernation everything works fine and the machine doe
indeed power off
I have started up Vista Ultimate x 64 in safe mode (only Windows prog
running) and the same problem happens, so I assume it is nothing to d
with any of my installed software
Any suggestions would be appreciated as I have tried all the threads o
most of the windows Web sites.:confused

try running 'start up repair
(http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91...air.html?ltr=S), i
fixes some startup issues, some registry issues, etc.
also try unplugging the power cord, press the power button for 10sec
(without any power), then plug it in and turn it on. then check if it'
fixed or not

You're a moron. From "Windows Help and How To":
http://tinyurl.com/63tony

Startup Repair is a Windows Vista recovery tool that can fix certain
problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent
Windows from STARTING CORRECTLY. When you run Startup Repair, it
scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so your
computer CAN START CORRECTLY.

The OP is having problems SHUTTING DOWN.

Hi Motarola2

Many thanks for the information you supplied
Tried both of the suggestions
Startup Repair ran fine and informed me that there were no problems an
I actually closed down the PC with the "soft" option
Thinking this was now fine I rebooted and found that the origina
problem happens
Tried your second suggestion ( unplugging etc ) and again same problem
I have to add that over the same period of time I have had othe
niggling problems .. Windows Defender fails to put an icon in the syste
tray until I manually open Defender
There are 2/3 other icons that fail to appear until I manually sta
them although they are set to start automatically, not sure if they ar
related, maybe you have another suggestion I could try
All these problems occurred about the same time(all ran well before
I have not added any new Software/Hardware and have disabled all m
anti-virus and malware programs but it makes no difference

Again many thanks for you help, it is appreciated

Regard
