Cannot start up windows

I was installing windows update, and in the middle of the installation my
computer suddenly froze. I started my computer back on and it sucessfully
pasted the post, but stoped at the screen where your could select, safemode,
safemode with networking, run windows in last working settings and etc. The
computer froze whenever i click on one of the options. I tried put in my
windows xp cd and went to the repair section. I know that for sure im missing
a file in the windows registry, but i dun't know how to find out what file im
missing. Can someone plz help me. I also can't reformat my computer because
there are some very important documents on it.

Some quick tips. First, kindly use some better spacing and a little white space in your posts. It would make it easier to read & digest.

Even if your problem is somehow related to Windows Update, a post in an XP related group (like microsoft.public.windowsxp.general ) would be more beneficial to you.

The Windows XP registry hives are complex enough (even any NT-based one), and it is not a simple case of a missing file.
It may well be the active registry was corrupted.

Did in fact your XP Repair complete ok? or did it even begin?

I'd first try doing a selective F8 bootup, and see if you can login to Safe Mode.
If so, right after the login, there's a YES/No question -- if you want to select Safe Mode or if you want a Restore point restore. Selecting NO, will being up a dialog to do a XP System Restore.

If need be, you may power off the pc for about 20 seconds, then power up again, and start tapping the F8 Function key.
