I also am seeing this after loading SP2. I was successful in loading it on 2
systems at work then decided that the security features would be good at home
also. I am running XP Pro on all systems, no XP Home. After the home system
got into the reboot loop, I used F8 to disable the automatic restart after
system errors and saw the message you describe in a blue screen. I was able
to start in recovery mode from the XP CD and get to a DOS prompt where I did
find winsrv.dll in C:\Windows\System32, but the date of the file (11/1/2002)
did not match the date of the same file on the systems at work (8/4/2004)
where SP2 loaded OK. I copied the newer file to a floppy and laid into the
system32 directory on the home system, but it did not change the behavior. I
eventually had to do a recovery from the base XP CD and then I was able to
get back on the system. I was then able to load SP1 successfully, but I am
hesitant to try the SP2 load again since it took about 3 hours to get the
system to come back up again.
