For testing only - you can stop the automatic update service (are you still getting
updates downloading?)
You'll need to turn the automatic update service on again to get updates.
Stop the Automatic Updates service
Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.
Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

| Hi TaurArian
|
| Many thanks for your reply. I am still unable to stop the auto updates - I
| have checked Norton's Live Update which was already turned off (as well as
| turning off anything else that mentioned "download" or "update"). It appears
| though the downloads are coming directly from Microsoft....in the logs I can
| see this in the IP address: au.download.windowsupdate.com (61.9.193.142) -
| although the numbers in the IP address usually change.....
|
| From another post, I used the idea of deleting the contents of
| C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution directory. This also didn't seem to work as
| the next time I connected, Windows downloaded the deleted directories and
| recreated them.
|
| Do you have any other ideas?
|
| Many thanks
| JG1
