cannot uninstall Windows Live 2009

I have been trying to uninstall Windows Live Messenger 2009 from my computer
and had thought that I'd been successful, but when I tried to install Windows
Live Messenger 8.1 I get a message stating that a newer version of Windows
Live Messenger is already installed and that I need to remove the newer
version before installing version 8.1.
When I click 'ok' on it then receive a message saying that windows Live
Messenger is missing a component and please reinstall it. When I tried to
reinstall windows live messenger 2009 the installer indicated that it was
already installed even though there is no trace of the program that I can
find.
PLEASE HELP ME BEFORE I GO CRAZY!!
