I've been trying for weeks to update this thing via Windows Update in
order to be able to make sure I can install SP1. Every time I try it
fails with an error code 80070005. The Help link wasn't very helpful.
I tried searching the Microsoft download site to download and install
the update manually, and came up empty. What now?

Try the hardware manufacturers web site for the updated driver.

Personally, I'd never trust MS to update my drivers.

Download and install the driver from the manufacturer's support site.
Generally, this is better than using Windows Update, the most recent drivers
are usually available from manufacturer support sites long before WU.

Why are you trying to update the driver? Are you having a problem?

Perhaps it's one of those drivers that must be updated before SP1 can be
installed.

You do realize that SP1 is designed to fail, if it detects incompatible
drivers, right?

I doubt it.

In any event, driver updates should be installed from the OEMs website or
the hardware mfgs website, not via Windows updates.

Don't doubt it, there are cases where drivers have to be updated before SP1
can be installed.

I have ignored Conexant driver updates via WU and have still been offered
the SP1 update. If the Conexant drivers were required I would not have been
offered SP1.

Believe it or not, they don't have the specific driver I need. They
only seem to have generic drivers. They have links to the various OEM
companies they sell to. Going to the one for my computer (Compaq/HP) I
can only find the same version of the driver that I already have, which
is one of the "or earlier" versions of the driver which Microsoft has
deemed incompatible with SP1.
