Cannot update desktop

I can't update my desktop. I couldn't get it past the initial checking for
installation software page. I eventually got past that by typing instructions
in the command prompt. Now I get error number 0x800A01AE, when I get to the
EXpress or custom buttons after I get through the Checking for Installation
Sortware page.
I followed the instructions for it by it having me registering a few
regsvr.dll files but that did not work. Does anybody have any instructions?
I just have the Windows Update Software installed, I do not have the
Microsoft update software installed. Does anybody think that I could download
this and get my updates from this process?

Clean out your temporary internet files etc. Try WU again. If no help -
