When the Microsoft tech took control of your system and was able to install
rev 7, how did she do it? That's your big clue. She obviously identified the
problem and found a workaround. Did you watch what she did?
It sounds like you have something conflicting. If it's not a service, try
some other things. For starters, make sure your anti-virus program is off -
this is what will cause problems, not your firewall. Also try turning off
your startup programs (also from msconfig).
Think about the different things you have installed on your system. Anything
unusual? Which of these could cause an incompatibility?
I know for sure that Java runs fine on Vista because I'm running it. Once I
identified the service that was causing install problems on my system (a
service from my printer), I had no problems installing it.
