Cannot update nor install

I can't update through the site, through auto updates, I can't even download
windows live or anything from windows/microsoft.

It downloads then says Unable to Install

I just repaired Windows from disc after problems due to malware. I have
Panda Internet Security and Virus protection.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

FYI

option 1 worked enuf, still have prublems with coupla things, fixable via
uninstall/rinstall of partcular components

I think my problem caused by failed install of VS2008 from optical, failure
caused by XP native indexer errors possibly due to filter defects.

SP-3 is more trouble then it is worth sometimes. I have had so much trouble
installing this SP-3 on more computers then not. Some times it will instal
perfect but most times it just causes grief. Is it better to have an SP-3 CD
