Hello to All -

Microsoft Update shows 4 items:
Office 2003 SP2
Visio 2003 SP2
Project 2003 SP2
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB904631)

When I try to download & install one or more of these the download goes
alright but the install/update fails with error code 0x80070643.

I've tried the steps listed in KB 836937, but even downloading the fullfile
versions of these updates and then trying to install in Safe Mode fails.

Please help, and thanks.

Hello TaurArian -

Thanks for the post; I'll try the steps that weren't listed in KB 836937.

Hello again TaurArian -

I worked through all the steps in the KB article you posted; most of the
settings were already set as listed and other suggestions such as renaming
files and the Catroot2 folder had no effect.

Thanks anyway; I think this is an "original media" issue in some way, but
even downloading the fullfile versions and then trying to install (even in
Safe Mode) does not work.

Try repairing your installation of Office 2003

Method 1 – Open Word, go to Help – Select Detect and Repair

Method 2 -

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click the Office 2003 program that you want to repair, and then click
Change.
4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, click Reinstall or Repair,
and then
click Next.
5. In the Reinstall or Repair Office dialog box, click Detect and Repair
errors in my
Office installation, and then click Install.
6. When the repair process is finished, run the update again.

Most likely you will need to have your Office 2003 CD handy.

Hello TaurArian -

Thanks again for your help, but after reading other threads in this group as
well as search results online, I think this is a Microsoft Update issue.
Nothing in your latest steps made any difference, and I'm going to wait to
see if MS comes out with any further patches/fixes.

Appreciate your help and your time,

I have seen two types of problems patching to SP2, and I found two different
solutions:

1. At work, I did not have the newest version of MSI. You can check that
at http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;893803 . After
that, the patch took just fine.

2. My home computer was also having problems with both the quick and full
SP2 patches. I was looking around and noticed others having luck with the
LISTOOL utility to disable installer caching and then performing a full
install. I discovered that my computer at home did not have the files cached
to begin with, so I used the LISTOOL utility to copy the files from my
installation CD to the computer. I then installed the full patch and it took
successfully. You can get LISTOOL at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en .

Hope this helps, I've been pulling my hair out over this one to.

Thank you, Mike -

The LISTool did the trick. Like you, I enabled caching for all my installed
Office 2003 products, the tool copied & cached files from each of my original
CDs, and then when I ran Microsoft Update all patches/updates installed
successfully.

Appreciate your help and the help from TaurArian.
