After a repair, I cannot use the auto update function. i get the error
message that update components BITS 2.0 and WinHttp 5.1 (KB842773) are
missing. Microsoft Installer 3.1. i've tried to delete everything in the
"Software Distribution" folder from a suggestion in the forum, but get the
same error message. Suggestions?

First, did you download the entire SP2 package or are you attempting to
install it via the Windows/Microsoft Update sites ?
Suggest you download the entire package:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Or, you can order the free CD but, you have to pay the postage :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

Not quite sure just what the issue is but, suggest you read this and
then go over the logs mentioned :
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2

Start with the Setupapi.log to see if the installation is failing at a
registry key.

Did you stop the Automatic Updates service prior to the attempt to clear
out SoftwareDistribution ? Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
After cleaning SoftwareDistribution, restart AU from
Start > Run > type in

net start wuauserv
Click OK or press Eneter

*** Strongly suggest *** you read these articles PRIOR to installing SP2
in order to save yourself grief:

I did attempt to use the auto update function. With your suggestion, I have
downloaded the SP2 package, but when i try to open and install it from my
hard disk, I get the error prompt that it is not a valid Win32 application!
I saved it to my hard disk and it is stored on the desktop. What now? (I
have also ordered the SP2 CD but want to soslve the probelme if possible
without having to wait the 4-6 week mail delay.)

Your download was corrupt or truncated. It should be about 266MB in size.

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and try the download again to hard disk.

When SP2 downloads there will be 2 files created, a 'placeholder' and
the actual SP2 package. When the download is finished the 'placeholder'
should disappear. Sometimes, they do not. Are you certain that you're
running the actual SP2 package ? Right click it, choose Properties.
As Robin has posted, it should be 266 MBs.

Which antivirus program/ security suite is installed ?
Suggest you temporarily disable the installed AV software from real time
monitoring of the system during the download.
Also, suggest saving SP2 to the Desktop or to My Documents and *not* to
the Temporary Internet Files folder.

I find that the downloaded file is 236 MB, not 266. So I guess i got a
truncated file.

I will dump it and try again. Thanks.

Hi;

The file should be 278,927,592 bytes when completely downloaded to your
local drive.
