For the past several days, I haven't been able to use my Windows Update
feature. Automatic updates are on, and I haven't downloaded anything or
changed anything on my computer. It connects to the Windows Update website,
then says "Checking for the latest version of Windows software", then just
stays at that screen as if frozen. I've left it open for an hour to see if
it changes at all, but the process just isn't starting. Is there a problem
with the website? Is there anywhere else I can tell it to DL the updates?

Same here. It goes to the screen and says its checking for the latest version
and just sits there. Also the Install, history and a couple of others are
grayed out. I had to install xp service pack 2 manually. I hope microsoft
fixes this crap. There isnt even any help under there trouble shooting site
that address this

Also using there new fancy auto update interface to turn it on it tells me
to do it through my controll panel. and that still doesnt work.

I have a similar problem. I get a little further than skelter717. I can
reach the choice of whether to use express or custom install. When I choose
custom install, and click on 'select optional software updates', nothing
further happens. A page seems to be being opened but I see no 'Done' sign.
There are no errors reported in the Windows Update.log.

Do I need to make some changes at my end or is there a problem with the new
updating system?

Steve

There is a program called BigFix
http://www.bigfix.com/download/download.html. Ive been using it for about 4
years now. I know you shouldnt have to use another update program for for
windows but.... Its not a shareware its a real program free to users and
actually scans all programs for updates not just windows. Please let me know
if that helps. For any questions

Thanks, gabe, for the suggestion. I followed up an observation I found here

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/serv...lligent_Transf
er_Service

to make sure I had Cryptographic Services, Background Intelligent Transfer
Service, and Event Log all running in order to get the new version 5 update
site working properly. I set them all to automatic and started by going to
RUN and typing in "services.msc" without the quotation marks to gain access
to these services (My OS = Xp Pro Corp). Lo and behold. The update site is
behaving itself for a change. I know this may be just fortuitous. But it
may help others with updating problems.

Try re-registering these files:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll

HOW TO:
Click the START button.
-Click the RUN selection.
--Type "regsvr32 wuapi.dll" (without the quotes) in the box. Click OK.
---You should receive a popup box indicating success. Click OK.
Repeat for each of the four remaining .DLL files and then reboot.

I'm having a weirder problem:

When I try to get windows updates (via the website)
it keeps on telling me that (basically) none are available
due to the fact that the updates script points me from:
[ windowsupdate.microsoft.com ] to:
[ v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp ]

When I try and override (trick it) by pointing to:
[
v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us
]
it sits there (just for a few seconds) then auto-reverts
back to the v4 site.

What I want someone to do is to send me the actual Active-X
control fileset (that represents the newer windows update)
so that I can (finally) get it to re-see that there are
updates pending for my machine. I'm certain of this fact
because I haven't updated/upgraded it (yet) to SP2 and I'd
really like it to be able to select the september issues.

The crazy thing is that BOTH of my computers started out
wiht Windows XP Pro (SP1) and when I told the office
machine (via IE) to point to the v5 site, I was offered up
the choice/possibility of installing the 'updatd'
windowsupdate active-x control fileset yet the home machine
(no it's NOT running XP Home but XP Pro as I already
stated) simply won't allow me (for whatever reason?) to
acquire the 'updated' active-x tool.

Sombody PLEASE capture/save the stinkin fileset to your
hard drive then send me an email saying that you've got it,
and I'll then reply with how you can send it to me ok?

Sign me "Frustrated" ;-(

Try pressing Esc (Stop) before it redirects and then press Ctrl-F5
(full Refresh). Even better if you can afford the possible inconvenience
would be to clear your TIF entirely.

In addition you may find it informative to activate Prompts for all Security
settings temporarily so you can step through the processing of the page
by saying Yes to each prompt. While the prompt is up you can check
what is going on in the TIF.

It looks as if WUV5 is so new that there is not much documentation
public yet. However, there is some information you can glean from
the following searches.

http://support.microsoft.com/search/...ays=30&InCC=on

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22wi...sa=X&oi=lrtip7

Have you checked your security settings to makes sure that you are
allowing ActiveX? (Again, the prompts idea would answer this
definitely.)
