Windows will not let me update. I have automatic updates turned on and those
aren't downloading either. I continually get error 0x800a01ad, where Windows
tells me to enable userdata persistence in my Internet options. I've enabled
it, turned off my firewall, re-registered my dlls, added the updates sites as
trusted sites, checked proxy settings (which i don't use), etc. In other
words, I've run every fix I can find on this site and nothing is working!

Basically same problem except I get error 0x800A0046 which best I can tell
relates to some sort of VB security error
(http://search.microsoft.com/search/r...&qu=0x800A0046).

Same error as you Don. Only when I look at the fix for that, it gets worse.

For Method 1: I can't access Local Users and Groups in my Admin
tools...there is no such listing.

For Method 3: There is also no Local Security Policy so I can't do that
either.

Did #2 but it didn't help.

Obviously the lack of these are my problem, but I lost my Windows Disk and I
don't know how to get these working again.

Anyone have suggestions?

I think something is really hosed in the new Windows Update software. The
account I am running from is in the admin group. The fact that there was
nothing that said the user has to make these changes or have these settings
to continue makes me believe there is something fundamentally wrong with
their new version.

Of course, it could be a case of trying to coerce those of use with Win2000
SP4 to upgrade!

Oh well, I guess I will wait a couple of days for a new version of the
Windows updater and see what happens then!

Good luck!

Don

Well, after re-doing the items listed at:

and a couple of reboots later, update now appears to work.
