Cannot update windows xp get event ID 20 and error 0x8007f004.

Any Ideas

you and me and thousands of other people.
I have spent over 100 hours on this now, with no help from MS.

Please open a Microsoft phone support call so they fix it.
Don't let them close the call, as they will try for no reason, until it's
fixed.

Tom,
I have managed to fix this problem now. What I did was diconnect my
PC from the network, went into start, run and entered the following command:

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

Restart the PC, reconnect to the network and run updates and it works. Looks
as though that MCSE has come in useful after all.

Try It and post your results.

I just wanted to say that I also was having this exact same error. I could
download but not install the updates. The problem is solved now. Some other
issues were solved as well just by sheer luck. Thanks mate.

Just failed to mention that running this command took a look time. I
actually fell asleep waiting for it to finish. Glad that I did it though.
Computer is working fine.

Just a question though, what exactly did it do to my computer?
