Dear users:
I downloaded a STANDALONE INSTALLER of WINXP SP3 whic apparantly runs fine,
but when installing files at about aproximately 60% it stops and I get the
message: "ACCESS DENIED" the Service pack 3 installation is not complete.
Select OK to undo the changes that have been made.

I''m logged in as an administrator.
I have seen this issue discussed elsewhere but the solution is very technical.
I'd appreciate some help.
Also, please where can I find a direct link to download AGAIN WINXP SP3?

Arturo

Where did you see it discussed? What was the solution?

Really don't remember, but this was the solution( not much help because I
can't find "Windows Resource Kits" in mmy computer.

1) Install subinacl.exe, and ensure it is install into this directory
(C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\)

2) Open notepad.exe, copy those commands from step 2 into the notepad.exe

e.g.

cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %windir%*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

3) Inside notepad.exe, on the top toolbar, select File --> "Save As...", a
"Save As" context field should opens

4) Under "File name" field, type reset.cmd, and under "Save as type" field,
select "All Files"

5) Click on the Save button to save this file "reset.cmd"

6) Login to an account with full Administrator rights

7) Double click on the newly saved file "reset.cmd", and let the script run.

Regards,

Thomas

Well, seeing as WinXP SP3 hasn't been released via Windows Update or the
Download Center yet (cf. http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1368), there's
no support yet either and who knows what you downloaded?

I installed the stand-alone SP3 this morning. All went well. I see that PA
Bear has a link showing SP-3 suspended ... OOPS.

Maybe my upgrade was successful because before running SP3 -- I let Windows
Update :
upgrade the update software ( once, than it upgraded the update again
....) (weird)
install 94(!) KB-xxxxx patches and security updates

Who knows. What really happened. Too many 1's and 0's flying around.

beam me up, Scotty
