ok, I cannot run Update unless I have 'Automatic Updates' unabled. Even if I
have it checked off for 'manual' and then start it manually, when I go to run
Updates - it says it isn't running. But - the task menu shows it and it is
downloading an update!

The only way I can get updates going is to have 'Automatic Updates' set to
.... automatic. Then it also starts downloading updates on its own (which is
exactly what i Do Not want! I want to pick them.......

Any thoughts?

thx

You can configure Automatic Updates to notify you of available updates but
not to automatically download or install them.

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306525

If, with Automatic Updates enabled, you have problems using the Windows
Update website:

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

4. Windows Update Checklist:

Thank you. Even now with 'notify me but don't automatically download' it is
downloading automatically! I cannot get it to scan and let me pick...

I now sent the following to MSFT

I am trying to see what new updates are available by going to the
http://update.microsoft.com page

Initially I couldn't see any because I didn't have Automatic Updates checked
off. I had it set to manual.

When I manually started it - the update still didn't work. I needed to
actually set it to 'automatic' under services before the web page would
recognize it. It then started downloading (could see it on the taskbar) -
which I DID NOT want.

Now, I cannot get it set up and scanning on the update page without it
starting to download itself! (I can see it on the taskbar).

I ran sysdm.cpl and set it to 'tell me but don't download' and it is still
downloading!

This happens every time.

Thx

Bob

Please elaborate on what you are seeing.
If it is just the AU icon doubleclick on it
and tell us also what you see then.

It's possible that you are just misinterpreting what the presence of
the AU icon in the notification area means. If doubleclicking on it
just shows you a list of items for downloading (title is: Choose updates
to download), there would be nothing wrong.

Hmm... even if you are seeing a list of updates which are ready for
install another possibility would be that they would be residual from
your previous AU setting. In that case you could either install those
and then wait for subsequent notifications to prove that your new settings
have taken effect or cancel those downloads and then use the "Change
automatic updates settings" option to open the Automatic Updates settings
dialog again so you can click on "Offer updates again that I have previously hidden."
