Hi,
Have the same problem as most of you here. I also get the error code 1058
when I try to activate Autom. Updates by running services.msc.
- I have Win Xp Pro SP3
- recently installed Norton 360 - in N360 settings tell me that
Micr.autom.updates is activated??? Allthough I see the flaming red cross by
the clock in the right corner telling me ny computer may be in danger if I do
not activate Mic Autm.updates.

Did all the settings possible without getting the error code 1058 but then I
only ended up on a "dead page" in Mic.Autm.updates.

I have after installing SP3 had an enourmous activity with trojans -
webspying software and all kinds of antivirusprogram offers when surfing.
Althoug I have always had good(?) protection from Norton Inetrnet Security I
now seem to have nothing with Norton 360 - or is it in the win xp sp3
package????

Please give me a solution to a free surfing and update life.

1. You cannot manually start the Automatic Updates service and you receive
an "Error 1058" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP or
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896224

2. However, the cause is most likely to be a Vundo/ZLOB/SDBot-variant
infection, all protected by a rootkit!

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, or other appropriate forums for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
