Here's the situation.
I was upgrading my video card drivers (ATI) one day and as I went through
the process of cleaning the original drivers off the PC for the new one, I
had to restart. I did so and when it tried to load Windows again it kept
restarting again so it was an endless cycle of automatic restarting. With no
other ideas (and I could get in to roll back to a restore point) I did a
non-destructive system restore so I had the original Windows XP Home files,
but none of the files I added were gone. The PC worked again!
Now onto the problem. I had recently upgraded to SP2 before all of this
happened and restoring the original Windows XP Home files I feel messed this
up. Now I have all the neat things like Windows Firewall and the Security
Center in the Control Panel, but they dont work, and more importantly to me,
I have the copy of Windows Movie Maker that came with the PC (1.1.#####) and
I want the newest 2.1 version. I figure I just need to upgrade to SP2 again,
but whenever I try to open
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ it never gives
me any security warnings or asks to install anything, it just sits there
saying:
"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...
Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this
time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security
warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click
Install or Yes to install the software."
Nothing happens past that. I managed to reinstall SP1 (thats how old the
Windows XP Home in this PC is originally) through the Express Installation
file I got off Microsofts site but that does not help me with SP2 or Windows
Update. Please help!
