Cannot use windows update cannot change Active x settings

Hi, I really need some help please..
My friends computer running on windows XP has a big problem, I cannot get it
to update at the Windows update site, I get an error message saying that the
security settings are to high and Active X needs to be enabled, this is not
limited to the windows update site it displays this message when ever you try
and download an active x control. Obviously I have checked the security
settings and reset them to default, used custom settings, added the windows
update site to trusted zone. all to no avail. Obviously something is
overriding the settings without me knowing, I see that lots of other people
have this problem but cannot find a solution. I have turned of the firewall,
the virus software and still get the same message.

She did have a lot of spyware and viruses on the pc which I have removed
hoping that would sort it but still no joy.

I dont wont to reinstall Windows but can't see any other solution, please
help I'm at my wits end.

Try this if you already have n't , go to Tools->Internet Options on IE,
Security and under set the setting to low under the Internet, security zone
(this may leave your computer open to further malicious active x controls)
Also check the Security setting under the custom level button in Security ,
if it is set to disable then you may not be able download the active x
controls.

alternatively you could just thank your lucky stars that XP sp 2 isnt going
to be downloaded and give you a whole new set of reasons to reinstall the pc
: )

Thanks but I have already tried that unfortunatley I still get the message
saying that the security settings may be set to high and that Active X needs
to be enabled, I can't understand what is causing this as they are enabled
under the security settings, I've been working on this problem for months and
can't find a solution this is my last hope before i reinstall windows.

Hi m@cr0,

I have the exact same pc as my friend, running windows xp and the same virus
scanner and firewall, I have never had any trouble with the Active x settings
and have installed xp sp 2 with no problems. I see from the posts that a lot
of people are having probs since the update but luckily i haven't had any
problems with mine.

if you dont want the update you can revert back to xp before installing sp2
using system restore and them hide the update at the windows update website.

Try a search:

(Google Groups search for
ActiveX "too high" MVP OR MSFT group:microsoft.*.windowsupdate
- sorted by date to show current thinking)

Notice the conventional keyword is ActiveX. The other search terms
will filter out extraneous discussions about ActiveX in general and
focus on answers instead of questions.
