i cannot write a email message

Help! I am unable to write an email message using my hotmail or yahoo email
account. When I click on my compose there is no text message area. I am using
Windows 2000 and people have told me to go to "Tools" and update my Windows
settings. I've tried that and it does not work. What should I do? Please let
me know.
