Ok, I have a Canoscan 4200F. It installs fine, Vista's Scanner and Cameras
can see it and says "device is ready" but every time I scan, it starts and
than a box pops up "can't communicate with scanner - check the
connections". It did work once for a day or two, then when I tried it a few
days later up comes that box and nothing I can do makes it work again.

Go to programs go to Cannon go to Canoscan Toolbox 4.6 to Canoscan toolbox
4.6 Right Click, Select properties, select Compatibility Check box Run this
program in compatibility mode for XP(Service Pack 2)

Thanks for the tip.. it works. My only problem was I never use teh toolbox,
just scan straight from photoshop but with Vista that doesn't work. I'm
baffled why it does with toolbox in compat mode but not from apps like
photoshop, photopaint, painter, etc.

Ok, totally bizarre.... I put photoshop on compatability mode (again) and
it's now working. Odd, I'd tried that before and it didn't work. I even just
uninstalled toolbox and rebooted and I still can scan from photoshop. Many
thanks anyhow, if it keeps working I can take off my inferior epson.
