Running Windows 2000 SP4

Hey Everyone.

I've just built a new PC and installed W2kSP4 and set it up on the LAN but
can't access windows update.
I can access any other site that I can think of with no problem but the
Windows Update site and Microsoft site just will not load at all.

Any ideas please?
Thanks very much
Danny

How the heck did you post here, then? How about this page:

The same way I did - by going through the help on the microsoft site. The
update page is coming up for administrators only after the SP2 install. Now
I'm trying to figure out how to uninstall it - any ideas?

MrD said that he couldn't reach any page on the microsoft site.

start > control panel > add or remove programs
click a check mark into the little box where it says "show updates"
scroll down to the updates and uninstall is how to uninstall.

Hey guys.

Ok I dont think I was clear on my question as the answer wasnt relevant.

I can access any site I choose but not the Microsoft or Windows Update site.

I've installed 2 different copies of Windows on 2 different machines with
the same result.

The Windows Update and Microsoft site times out, all the others load fine.

Any ideas please?

IE first looks at hosts, then lmhosts to figure out where to go.
In XP the hosts file is here: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\
If that file has an unreal listing for microsoft.com, IE will time out.

Default active content is only local host resolved to 127.0.0.1
Drop HOSTS into notepad to see if the problem is in there.

Thanks Michael - but I'm running 98 and there isn't a show updates box. The
latest update listed in the add/remove is from July. But, it downloaded,
installed and rebooted my computer and said everything was good. Hah! Any
suggestions? I'd hate to reload windows again but that might be my only
choice.

Searching "administrators only" gets many hits. Here's one:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;316524
Try method 5, then method 4, then method 3 working your way upwards.
I put my 98se box in the closet, so all I can give you is a hunch. You
want WU to work - the link addresses the issue you have.

Reinstalling windows can seem easier than searching for, finding and
applying the good fix because sometimes it actually is.

This works!!
Step 1: Reset Internet Explorer settings.
==========
1. Click Start, Run, type: inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
2. Select the General tab, and in the Temporary Internet files window, click
Delete Cookies, and click OK.
3. In the same tab click Delete Files, check the "Delete all offline
contents" box and click OK.

4. Click on the "Security" tab. Click on each zone and click the button
"Default Level".
5. Click the Advanced tab, and click "Restore Defaults".
6. Under the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restarting).
7. Click to select the Use HTTP 1.1 and the Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy
connections check boxes.

Step 2: Check the local Windows Update services.
===============
This issue can occur if three services have not been configured correctly.
Please refer to the following steps to check them:

1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the
open box and click OK.
2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".
3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account"
is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is
unchecked.

4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If
not, please click the Enable button to enable it.
5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic".
Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the
service.
6. Repeat the above steps with the other two services:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) Event log

Note: The Startup Type of BITS can be "Automatic" or "Manual"; the Event log
service is enabled on all of the hardware profiles, which does not have an
option to enable or disable on certain hardware profile.

Step 3: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.
===============
This behavior may occur if the temporary folder of Windows Update has been
corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please
be assured the folder will be created again when we visit the Windows Update
site again.

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

net start WuAuServ

Step 4: Re-register the Windows Update components.
=================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter.
2. Run the following commands:

Regsvr32 msxml3.dll
Regsvr32 wuapi.dll
Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Regsvr32 wucltui.dll
Regsvr32 wups.dll
Regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Regsvr32 qmgr.dll
Regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
Regsvr32 jscript.dll

We will receive "succeeded" message if a component is registered successfully.

Step 5: Disable firewalls or other Internet browser programs that can affect
the Internet connection.
==================
The following programs can affect the connection to the Windows Update site
and I suggest you remove or disable them:

TweakMASTER DNS
Web Accelerator
Download Accelerator
GetRight
Browser Blaster

Sygate Personal Firewall
Norton Internet Security
Freedom Firewall
Zone Alarm Firewall

If you have any other similar programs such as a pop-up blocker, please also
temporarily remove or disable it to test the issue. If this issue appears to
be related to a firewall program, I also recommended that you contact the
firewall manufacturer to obtain the information to configure the firewa ll
options to allow the access to the Windows Update site.

Step 6: Reset the proxy list (and bypass list).
==================
This issue can occur if the proxy has not been configured correctly. Let's
first reset the proxy list.

1. Open Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2. Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advanced.
3. Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.

4. Quit Internet Explorer.
5. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
6. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

proxycfg -d
proxycfg -u
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv

Note: If you use a router to access the Internet, please remove the router
and connect the computer to the Internet directly. This issue can be likely
caused by incorrect router configurations.

The W98 WU "administrators only" problem may have a fix.
PA Bear posted this paste this evening:

<paste>
This "Administrators Only" problem is not unknown in Win98; see
http://snipurl.com/in61. A cursory review of the archived threads in that
link suggest two main causes of the behavior:

1. Anti-virus application (AV app) running in background when going to
Windows Update or when installing updates.

2. Interference by other third-party applications (e.g., firewall, "web
accelerators", using a browser other than Internet Explorer to go to Windows
Update, hijackware).

To test for #1 above, try disabling your AV app before going to Windows
Update and scanning. Be careful! No other applications or windows should
be open/running other than the IE window used to go to Windows Update (IE
Tools > Windows Update).

There have been cases in the past where overinstalling IE6 SP1 was needed to
correct corruption caused by the AV app:

- First, close everything via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer
(includes your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline).
Start>Run>IE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all the parts you
use, including OE (but none you didn't originally download) and overinstall.
Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer.

- Now, with AV app and all other running processes still closed, check
in at Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

To test for #2 above, try disabling your firewall and/or any "web
accelerators" before going to Windows Update and scanning (Be careful!) and
only use Internet Explorer (i.e., not AOL browser, Firefox, etc.) to go to
Windows Update.
