Can't add Display Picture in Windows Live Messenger

Hi, when I try to add my own image to Display Picture to my recently
installed Windows Live Messenger, I get the message:

"The file you selected is not a valid image file. Please choose another file"

I have t ried with .jpg and .gif files with no success, and using the same
image that worked previously in MSN Messenger

I am using Windows Live Messenger version 8.1 (build 8.1.0178.00)

Has anyone else seen this problem - what am I doing wrong?

This does not work for me. Other things that don't work: resizing the photo,
renaming the photo, changing file extentions, reinstalling msn, deleting
other photo's in my display files, etc. etc. This is so frustrating!
