Can't boot after restoring machine from backup image

The motherboard on my Vista machine failed and I had to replace it with a
different one and in the process the hard disks seem to have got wiped out.
All other hardware is exactly the same. I have a backup image of the hard
disk which I restored to the machine but now it won't boot. The initial
screen with the moving bar appears but after that the machine reboots and
then I get a screen saying "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or
software change might be the cause. To fix the problem insert the
installation disk and run repair your computer".

I did that but it failed to do an automatic repair. Is there anything else
I can do to make the machine boot up from the image? I am desperate to get
the machine working again without having to go through the lengthly process
of reinstalling Vista and all the programs.

Would greatly appreciate your help.

Pete

The problem is that your new hardware is too different. You didn't mention
what you used to make the backup image. If Acronis, then there is a
Universal Restore plugin for True Image. If something else, check with that
software's tech support to see if they have something similar.

Have you replaced the broken Mobo with a different TYPE of Motherboard.
You just say different?

Is it OEM Vista, which is tied to the original Motherboard, like Dell, etc?

Backup image was taken with Acronis and I used the bootable rescue disk to
restore the image, but to no avail.

Is the Universal Restore plugin freely available and would this solve the
problem?

Thank you for your help.

As Malke has pointed out, the hardware changes are too radical.
The OS thinks it is being installed in another computer, and the new
hardware leads it to think like that.
Slave your HD in another computer, or a USB external HD enclosure to read
and copy your Data.
Then reinstall Vista.

The Universal Restore costs around $35. Go to Acronis's website for more
information. I can't promise that it would solve the problem but it might.
To use UR, you install the plugin and then make the Acronis bootable CD.
After you boot with the CD, you'll see True Image with Universal Restore as
an option.

It would solve your problem but you have to have a license for ATI
Echo Enterprise Server to use it. Cost: $299.

And pay me another licence!

New board = New Licence!
Never forget this.

Not true. While it may be true that UR doesn't work with True Image Home
(and I don't know this - I would check with Acronis), I have True Image
Echo Workstation ($79) and UR works fine with it.
