Thanks.

I am having the same problem (twice!). Here's my situation: I'm running a
Gateway PC P4 1.7ghz w/ 768MB RAM and 40GB HD.

Both times, I installed SP2 (1st time from download over 4 months time and
2nd from CD). It says that the install was successful, but when the
PCRestarts, I the small DVI mode (video) "icon" on the screen for a second
or two, then the Gateway logo, the screen flutters, then goes thru the same
sequence and then go to the screen telling about "Windows did not start
properly ... select Safe mode, Normal mode or Restore back to last known
check point.

Both times, I've been able to restore successfully. After the first time, I
also got some documentation from MS website about manually cleaning up after
an unsuccessful install of SP2. That seemed to screw up some of my drivers
as I now have no sound.

Thanks for any help.

Well, I have a hewlett packard winXP. When i boot the system appears to start
normally for a few seconds then it flickers.........goes to a screen that
tells you that windows could not start properly, please select a startup mode
( safe, normal, last known good configuration ).The only mode it will start
in is safe mode. So when it appears to be booting correctly, I hit F8 before
the screen flickers to go to the mode choice screen,.......then and only then
I can choose the last known good configuration.....thats the ONLY way my
machine will boot properly. I have to do this process every boot. PLEASE HELP
ME!!!!!

Could you explain that in English? .... please. And also with some
additional detail.
What is "shipset"? How and where do I get it? etc.

Thanks,
Jim H.
