Can't change "password protected" settings in Vista Ultimate.....

.........even though I am in the Administrator account. I recently moved
across country and had to set up my machines, router, switch and went from
DSL to cable internet connection. I have tried everything I can think of
the turn the password protection off in the Network settings, but, it will
not apply. I have not ever had this problem before. As I am the only
person who uses my machines, I never use the password protection feature.
But, the Public folders and Printer settings show password protected,
requiring a password to access the shared folders or use the shared
printers. I have tried everything I can think of, troubleshooting as many
settings and permissions and such, but, nothing seems to allow me to turn
the password protection off in the network settings.

I have the same problem in both Vista Ultimate x86 and X64 on 2 separate
machines that are on the same network. I have used the Vista X86 and X64 on
these two machines since Vista was released, and have never had this kind of
problem. I would truly appreciate any suggestions of where I might look for
other settings that may be blocking my ability to change this setting. I
have checked all the Share settings, they are the same as all the ones I had
set before the move, and I see no reason why the settings have now changed
and will not allow me to change them. Nothing has changed with the User
accounts on either machine.

It sounds like you've got the network identified as a Public one in the
Network & Sharing Center instead of correctly as Private.

Hi Malke! :-)

No....the network on all the machines is a private network and works fine.
I have had this network setup for the past 4 years, it is only since I moved
and had to reset everything with the router for the Cox Cable setup that
this has happened. I am not sure if there is something in the Router or the
Cox end that is causing the password protection to be enforced, or the Vista
end. I have spent many hours trying to troubleshoot this and can't seem to
find anything that points to a specific cause. I have been in contact with
Cox Cable and have all the settings according to their requirements, and
engaged with them in remote desktop and they have found nothing in their
settings that should be affecting the password protection.

Any other suggestions as to what/where to check? That I can't change it
even in the Administrator Account is curious.

Hi Malke,

Ok....I have been able to locate and rectify the problem for two of the
machines. It was in the firewall, as somehow it got changed during the
re-setup of the machines and/or perhaps the router. Not sure how the
firewall settings got changed to Off, but, turning the firewall on and
resetting the settings and then rebooting for the two machines seemed to
resolve the problem and allowed me to reset the password protection to Off.
However, I am not able to do the same with the one machine. I have tried
numerous times, will all the other machines off, and still no luck.

However, this machine has the MS OneCare and Live Mesh installed on it, and
although I ran these programs for more than a year on this machine with no
problems, I am wondering if perhaps one of them might be causing a problem
with the new Cable modem. Any suggestions where I might look from here,
other than the obvious?

Can't speak about Live Mesh, but I'd uninstall OneCare and use something
better such as NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast. If you still want to keep
OneCare, it disables Local Area Network file/printer sharing by default.

I have been participating in the OC perpetual beta for over 6 months and did
not have this issue before. Not sure if the OC is the problem. I just
relocated to the west coast, and now have Cable as opposed to DSL where I
lived before. I thought perhaps this might have made some sort of change in
how my router and switch would work, but, since the other machines are
working ok now, not sure this might be a factor with the remaining issue on
the last machine.

Went through this all all settings set as directed, and the problem is still
unchanged. The only difference in the machines is the OC and MESH, the
others don't have it. But, as this problem did not exist before with these
2 programs installed, not sure if that is a factor at this point.
