Can't Choose "Select by Type" Updates

Hi. I'm running XP with SP2 and IE 7. When I run Windows Update through IE,
and select Custom updates, it goes through the process and then shows me the
high priority updates. I've installed all of them except Malicious S/W
Removal since I'm using SpySweeper. I've reinstalled IE 7 and have the popup
blocker turned off. I've set security levels to the default settings.

I can't select any optional software or optional hardware updates. If I
right click on those links to open new tab or window, I get a blank screen. I
can go to the options links below, and get valid screens. After I select one
of the options, I can't get back to the High Priority type selection.

I've run out of ideas on this one.

Thanks for any help.

1. Don't rely on Spysweeper alone: Accept/download the Malicious Software
Removal tool whenever it's offered and let it run. Do you get any messages
afterwards? (If not, it didn't find anything.)

2. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:

3. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?

4. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b)
all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist? If it does,
do NOT reinstall IE7.

How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7:

IE7 (Un)Installation and Anti-Malware Applications:

5. Required reading IMHO before reinstalling IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER!

[And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.]

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

Thanks PA Bear,

The No Add-ons mode worked. I didn't think I put in any add-ons, but there
must have been some obnoxious program that did without telling me. I didn't
realize that no-add-ons version was in the system tools area. I didn't go
looking around deep enough to find some of the rarely-used tools MS has in
there.

There's a lot of good information in your response. Hopefully you've had
that information already available, and didn't have to go creating all of
that for me. That posting is going in by reference notes paper file for
keeping around.

Thanks again,
Paul

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.

Now you need to determine which of the disabled Add-ons was causing the
problem: Start IE7 in No Add-ons mode then enable an Add-on, one at a time,
until you find the culprit, then tell us.
