Win XP Home, MSN Explorer 7.xx, dial-up to MSN.com. Autoupdate set to
download and let me know. Click the update site from Favorites (MSN
Explorer). Will no longer connect. Hangs and have to use task manager to
get out and resign in.
Checked the logs - event and wu - various error nos. 80072efe, 0x80200010
(this one is what shows on the update history check but KB articles don't
have an answer), others 0x80072ee7, 800efe, 0x80072F78. Please note that
MSN Explorer is my normal access to the Internet - Not IE - so will the
re-registering that's been put forth here in the group work ? Does anyone
have a suggestion ?
I tried the MSXML3, that said OK, but when I tried to do the "net stop
wuauserv" said it could not. This has never happened before and all else
seems to be OK - dials up, e-mail works, no trouble going to other "favorite"
sites, etc., etc.
Could someone offer some suggestions ? Thanks much.

I have exactly the same problem. Cannot get into any ms update sites
via browser - just get the page can't be displayed message.
I reformatted pc and reloaded windows xp home and sp2 (which i had on
disk). Now automatic updates seems to work. It did download updates,
but update websites still will not open.
Have made all scans for Spyware, virus, etc etc. Checked HOSTs is not
blocking.
Sorry I'm no help to you, but would be interested in any other
solutions.

I don't think that the problems are spyware, malware, virus, etc. I think the
problem is the windows update page itself. I had received all kind of errors.
My pc hang up trying to verify if I have the latest windows update software.
My MIS 2006, AdAware, Spybots, windows defender (beta), and online checks
results say to me that may pc is free of any kind of malware or virus. So,
every start later than the august updates was download and installed in my
pc. I think, MS is responssible in search a solution for this problem.

MSN Explorer basically is just a IE with the home page set to MSN. You are
still using IE to view web-pages, but you are using an MSN Internet Account
to get there.

If 'net stop wuauserv' says that it cannot, more than likely the Service is
off. Open services.msc and see what the Startup Type is for Automatic
Updates. It should be Automatic and Background Intelligent Transfer Service
(BITS), should be Manual or Automatic.

Automatic Updates Status should be Started.

I would do the 'net stop wuauserv', then the re-registering, then clean-out
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder, then 'net start wuauserv'.

Its even weirder than that!!

I have 2 pc's on home network, pcA & pcB.

B connects to the internet via A (A has ADSL connection).

A will get microsoft pages with no problems.
B cannot get MS pages via A, but can get them if I connect using dialup
from B

So pc A is blocking B from MS pages, but allows itself access.

Get your head around that!!!
