Can't connect to Win. Update

I have done a clean install of XP Pro on my DELL 4100, and havce have
problems getting update.
I currently have 8 installed.
When I click on a "link" to W.U. The status bar freezes, the window freezes
and I have to do a C-Alt.-D to back out of the broken program.
I have tried the regserve/net stop wau. series of file restarts and looked
for a v4 conflict and still nothing. CompassRule doesn't even email me with
any more "fixes".
Everything is working great excepting Win.Update.
Should I do a clean reinstall or a repair?
Do NOT install SP1 and load the SP2 disk instead?
I have a Maxtor Partition for my XP Pro on one and the rest of the Programs
I run are on the other Partition. (NfTS).
Alo, I have a MaxtorOneTouch with Retrospect.
Please Help!
