Can't connect to Windows Update--get "undefined"

When I go to the start/help/windows update and click on update the only thing
that comes up on the screen is the word "undefined." I can get to update if
I don't use the start/help menu (but of course run into the KB899589
problem). This same thing happened about a year ago and someone gave me a
file or two to put in the "run" box and it seemed to fix it. It seemed to
happen after I ran a "Net" something from Microsoft in order to install NY
Times Reader. I recently had to use the recover disk, but did manage to use
update for SP 3 before this "undefined" problem started. I run XP pro with
SP3. Anyone know how I can access update again via start/help/update?

CrystalBall© sez...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

Thanks. Excuse the dumb question, but how do I know if I am running XP Pro
system 32 or 64?

If you have to ask, you're probably running x32. (You'd have paid quite a
bit more for x64.)

If %windir%\syswow64 <=this folder is NOT found, you're running x32.

or to find out if you have a 32 bit system (x86) -
Click Start, Select Run, now type in: msinfo32

Thanks for the great help. I think I can still download Windows Update if I
don't go through the Start/Help/Update. Think I'll wait for another update
and see if it downloads before I try to apply the fixes. I am not too
confident about these things. If I register the Wups2.dil file and that is
not the problem, will it do any harm?

re-registering the Wups2.dll file will not do any harm.
