Can't create a restore point

OK. I'm pretty much at the end of my rope on what I can accomplish drawing on
my own limited ability.

I tried to do a system restore today after installing some updated drivers
that my computer apparently really didn't like. I was not able to do so (I
didn't write down the error code, if there was one). I managed to eventually
get my system back to where it should be after a whole bunch of uninstalling
and reinstalling.

Just when I get one problem fixed, I find another. I tried to create a
system restore point today before updating additional drivers and was told
that I couldn't due to a VSS error (this code was 0x80042318).

I tried to run chkdsk from a command prompt which was suggested on another,
vaguely related question (system restore problem with a different error), but
was told that I didn't have sufficient privledges. I am running as
administrator, so I don't quite undersand this.

Any help would be appreciated, before I give up on Vista all together and go
back to XP.

Hi,

Do you have Norton's installed? If so, see:

Do you have any Symantec products installed such as Norton
Antivirus/Internet Security? If so, this is a known issue. See MVP Bert

No, but I have McAfee (which has also been giving me problems lately). Could
that be causing the same problems?

Possibly, you could try disabling and see what happens.

Yes, I have Norton 360. I turned off all antivirus components, and I
am still getting the message. Any other ideas?

Your opinion- do I really need Norton, or does Vista have sufficient
protection built in? It has given me multiple headaches in the past
(like blocking file sharing access across my home network), and I
would just as soon trash it.

Hi,

You need antivirus protection, you just don't need Norton's version of it.
Try AVG free or NOD32.

I think I have found the source of the problem: an external drive had
become unplugged, and EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NOT CHECKED to be backed up,
system restore could not find it so it crashed and burned. I would
have expected better quality control from MS!

Did you try running System Restore from the Windows Recovery Environment?
