Hi Stephen,
I use Windows Live Mail (Hotmail) with Internet Explorer, not MSN Explorer.
I did what you suggested under sign in, but it won't let me uncheck them
all, the "Open window live messenger main window when Live Messenger starts"
remains checked.
I don't use Messenger at all.

Microsoft did a bunch of renaming a year, or more, ago: "Windows Live Mail"
is now a desktop email client. "Hotmail" is now, "Windows Live Hotmail".

If you don't use it, remove it. If you are referring to "Windows Live
Messenger", it is a component of "Windows Live Essentials", listed in your
"Add/Remove Programs". When you click the "Remove" button, and follow the
Wizard prompts, you will be offered a list of installed components of
"Windows Live Essentials". Place a check in the box beside "Windows Live
Messsenger" and proceed. Only those components you select for removal will
be removed.

If you are referring to Windows Messenger 4.x, that is a component
controlled under the "Add/Remove Windows Components" icon. Click on that
icon, and scroll down through the list; Windows Messenger is usually at the
end of the list. Clear the check from the box and "Apply", or "OK" your way
out of the menus.

Thanks Norman,
I prefer to just disable it.

I have thought abt deleteing it, but don't have the nerve since its comes
back with a question asking if I am sure it want to delete because other
programs may stop functioning without it!
I use Windows Live mail for my email- will that stop working? I REALLY don't
want to lose that or get a new acct.

Every time Messenger does an update, it HAUNTS me to update my Messenger,
which I don't ever plan to use. Drives me insane! I also get invites to be
someones IM buddy (who I don't even know!)Thats the last thing I want to do
is have someone add me as an IM buddy. Yet I can not block these IM notices,
invites to update, upgrade ect.

I am trying to protect myself from unwanted exposure to junk mail, virus's,
spam, and slimy people, but other than deleteing the entire "Essential"
package I don't know what to do.

I don't see any way to disable it from the web site. Whenever I access an
account using the web, Messenger is started. I don't have it set to log in
automatically. I really don't know how to prevent it, short of removing it.

There must be a 'back door' to also setup messanger because I can't uncheck
it. How FRUSTRATING it is!
I may just have delete after all.Ugh.

First of all, you can delete Windows Live Messenger without messing up Live
Mail. You'd be amazed how many people uninstall and reinstall WLM all the
time to fix problems.

When you say you tried to uncheck the box, were you logged into WLM at the
time? There are a number of options that only become available for selection
if you are logged into the program. Some are available before sign in, but
that is not one of them.

If you merely want to play it safe and disable WLM, simply sign in, make the
appropriate selections from the Tools/Options/Sign In options and sign off.
It shouldn't be any more complicated than that.
