Can't do updates anymore

I "Upgraded" to Microsoft Update today and since then can't get updates. It
starts with this:

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:


Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

It downloads and installs - or so it says.

I again check for updates and it takes me back to the first message again.
This on a PC running Windows 2000 Server. Everything was current about 2
weeks ago and the only thing that changed was to install the latest update
facility.
