way back when I wanted to tighten up IE, I set one setting at a time and then reloaded
winupdate site. I tried to set most settings to "prompt". then saw how tight I could set
settings and still use winupdate. unfortunately the wording of the popup messages
didn't/don't much resemble wording of the settings in Internet Options! (Genius!)
since then I found some recommendations on the web.

no idea what inf bar suggests, but I'd put winupdate URL in trusted, then lax out your
settings only for trusted zone. maybe inf bar suggests that :-)

For XP, I've discovered that using semi-auto setting lets me see what is being updated,
and the semiauto procedure seems independent of Internet Option settings.
So now I don't even use IE anymore - not even for winupdate -- because I was so
annoyed with those nag popups about ActiveX being turned off: "ActiveX is turned off!
Don't you want a Russian hacker to snoop around inside your Quickbooks files?"
