cant download anti virus due to sp2

hi since downloading sp2 i had the avg free edition anti virus after
downloading sp2 it sed it was out of date i went onto microsoft site for
recommendations picked one that sed 12 month free trial i then downloaded
this caused my system to crash everytime i try and download an anti virus
edition something always go wrong any help would be appreciated
