A similar thing happened to me. I think my laptop ran out of power
mid-download of an update. When I tried to resume, the download was corrupt,
but Windows wouldn't re-download it. It just kept saying that it's already
downloaded and ready to install, but the install kept failing. I couldn't
get round it.
I tried 'ignoring' that update, but becuase it's downloaded already, the
installer kept trying to install it even if I had it flagged to be ignored.
In the end, I got the XP Installation CD (which luckily has SP2 built in),
and re-ran the install to repair it. It remembered all of my settings and
applications, but put the Windows software back to a post install state with
NO updates. I then spent the next few hours re-applying all the updates, and
now I'm fine again.
I have left the offending update flagged to ignore, as I don't trust it now,
but it'd probably be ok to include it.
