Can't download update files

I'm using Windows 98, and trying to run Windows Update
before Microsoft stops supporting it; I've heard that will
be the case soon. Update scans my computer, identifies 17
critical updates needed, but when I click "Install Now",
Widows Update just freezes; it never opens the next window
or shows a "download progress" bar, and I have to close it
using Task Manager. I've tried several of the fixes
suggested on the "Windows Update Troubleshooter", but
nothing has helped.

Any suggestions?

There are a couple of ways to resolve this. Posting what you've tried
would make it easier to suggest as method.
Have you tried using the Internet Explorer Repair tool ?

Do this in Safe Mode to prevent another program running in the background.

Another way would be to go to Windows Update and write down the critical
updates offered, and then go here and manually download them :
