Computers these days are good for sucking people dry of precious time. We
try to get things done and wind up going in circles. A dog chasing it's tail
seems to have better success. We seek answers and get led astray. At least
God's Word isn't that way. If we are not part of the solution in life, we
are without a doubt a big part of the problem... or someone enjoys keeping it
going. Greed is the primary $tall and reason I believe for people not
helping others who have legitimate needs.li

Your subject mentions two problems:
1. Can't download updates
2. Faulty email links.

You do not explain either of these two particular problems in your
posting's text. You explain instead what you consider to be people's
general problems with computers, and complain that they won't help.

I have a suggestion. Write about one particular problem you are
having with your computer. Then summarize that one single problem in the
subject line, and post it. This is likely to motivate assistance.

If you are willing to make a fresh start, I think people will help you.

A computer repair/fixer/someone came over and told me I needed a
virus/spyware program and that he had a good one. Thus I paid 49.00 for
"Zone Alarm" which I do not understand at all. Factoid: I downloaded
Internet Explorer 7. "I felt relatively sure/safe in doing so; but when I
click on Tools and click on microsoft windows update and then click on
Install now, I get The website has encountered a problem and cannot display
the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you
solve the problem.

You were mistaken in seeking the complication of beta testing IE7
at a time when your computer is not free of problems. Zone Alarm
is not an anti-virus program. It is a firewall plus anti-spyware program.

You need a firewall, and Windows XP has a built in firewall which may
not be as spiffy as Zone Alarm's, but it is there and normally on. What
I am willing to do is to help you to get updates. That is the function of
this newsgroup. Let's stick to the newsgroup and not email each other.

If you have installed Internet Explorer 7, uninstall it. Click Start, then
Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs, select IE7, click remove.
This should restore Internet Explorer 6, which isn't beta - not trial.

Microsoft is willing to let users try OneCare free for three months:

Select > Go in the Try It Free section, give your email and get it.
That should get rid of any viruses and spyware you have.
Before you install OneCare you should uninstall Zone Alarm.

What you're looking for is a firewall, an anti-virus and anti-spyware.
I've tried OneCare - it's simply all three. I decided to go with a more
complicated solution - three different programs - but OneCare is OK.

Let's take a look at the worst trouble you might have to go through.
Some people who are familiar with Windows are resigned to
periodically completely reinstalling it. It's tedious - they usually try other
things before overwriting all the information on the computer, but it's
a way of getting rid of any and all problems that have accumulated.

If you want to hose everything out and make a fresh start, that's
worth examining. Am I right in thinking you have Windows XP sp2?
