Can't find File Associations

Where (on Vista 64 Home Premium) can I find "File Associations"? I have
received two e-mails with Power Point Files and when I attempt to open from
the message, I get a note indicating that it doesn't have a program
associated with it and for me to create one in "File Associations". I can't
locate any such on Vista. I have the PP Viewer 7 on the computer, so I can
save the file to my hard drive and it opens readily there but not in Windows
Mail. I did click on the "Always open with this program" option. (I have
already tried changing the security settings for mail so as to enable
pictures and HTML stuff to open but that didn't work either--so I have
changed them back.) What am I missing, please?
Thanks!

Thanks, Jane. I wouldn't touch my Registry with a ten foot pole, but I'll
see if my relatively geeky son wants to do it for me. (Or, hopefully
Microsoft might have a patch one day?) Is there even a place to set File
Associations on Vista 64--like we had in previous versions? I haven't
received any other kinds of attachments so guess when I do I'll right click
and see what happens.

Thanks again for your help. Now, I know it isn't just me.
Lola

I don't know why that person has you trying to do anything with the
Registry. You just use File Association, find the file type you want to
associate to a program, browse to the program and set the association.

You can also get there by using the Start button/All Programs/Default
Programs

Thanks.......that's what I was hunting for, but afraid it won't help with
the PPS problem. (I had already downloaded a PPS file to my hard drive and
it opened with Power Point viewer just fine.) I found out that it will not
in Windows Mail because of a Microsoft "oops" that causes it not to open
there unless you have Office or Power Point on your computer--or edit the
registry. Jane just gave me a link to a help site (below) where I found the
explanation. She didn't actually tell me to edit it--but I don't want Office
nor make slide shows so the registry would be the most feasible option.
Thanks again for the answer about the file associations.
