My computer system can't even find the file specified. I can't possibly
uninstall KB834707 and unfortunately everything remains the same ie The
procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the
dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll".
Can anyone help please? I don't want to reformat my hard disc as I have
loads of important files on it
Thanks

The folder is Hidden. You will need to change the Explorer Folder options.
Open Folder Options in Control Panel and there under View select to Show
Hidden files and folders.

Not sure since your post doesn't list the reason you need to remove
KB834707. Is this article relevant?

Sorry for not being specific enough. I had the same problem has everyone
else, ie only my desktop is showing on my screen and nothing else and the
error msg 'The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located
in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll' pops up.
I tried following the instructions to uninstall KP 834707, but unfortunately
my computer system can't even find the file specified, so the uninstallation
process can't be completed.
I'm at a loss now
Thanks Sky for the advice, would be very thankful if someone could help!

Do you mean that you don't see the Taskbar? Or that you don't see any icons
on your Desktop? Or...??? Sorry, I don't understand.

I know that several posts related to that issue have been made here, and I'm
assuming you have tried those solutions since you mention removing the
KB834707 item. Do you have XP SP2 installed? You are using Windows XP,
right? What is displayed when you click Start/Run and type WINVER into
that line and press Enter?

This is a bit different, but the steps in the Resolution section to replace
some essential system files may help resolve your issue, so give them a try:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;829786

Does that item show in your Add&Remove list? So when you run Remove you see
that it can't be removed because some files are missing. Is that what is
happening? Do you have this folder on your system:
".:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB834707$" (again note that it will be a Hidden
folder, so you will have to enable that option within Explorer). If that
folder is there, try clicking this file:
"C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB834707$\spuninst\spunins t.exe" to see if that will
remove the KB item.

Last, do you have your original Windows XP CD? You may want/need to do a
Repair installation (just install Windows over top of itself). You should
not lose any data and it should clear up this issue. Although you will need
to apply recent updates again. If you aren't familiar with doing that, the
basic steps are here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q315341 and MS MVP
Michael Stevens has some good info worth reading about the Repair process
here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Hi

A possible solution here (skip the KB834707 uninstall part if not
possible to do and continue with the rest):

The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located...
http://weblogs.asp.net/oldnewthing/a...14/242241.aspx

In worst case, you will have a unbootable system after doing the above,
so you should have a backup of your data (that you should have anyway).
