My brother just got a new PC with Windows XP Home Edition SP2 however it
doesn't have the Windows Update file, wupdmgr.exe, therefore no Windows
Update icon. Any way to download this file .. or can I copy my file (WinXP
Pro) to his?

TIA
Connie

wupdmgr.exe as nothing to do with Windows Update. It's a signature of
WORM_SPYBOT.B Trojan!

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

I'm totally confused. When I right click on my Windows Update icon the
target is to wupdmgr.exe & it runs the Windows Update. Also, a reply from
Carey Frisch, Microsoft MVP to an earlier thread (windows update link missing
from...), explained how to display the Windows Update Icon by using the
Taskbar properties to add it to the Start menu using wupdmgr.exe.

Sorry. Failure to find wupdmgr.exe *may* be a sign of an infection, Connie.
Is WUPDMGR.EXE (all caps) not found in C:\System 32 <=this folder?

Is a reliable, fully updated anti-virus application installed?

yes on both questions. I had him do a search of drive C (after not finding
it in the System32 folder) for that file & found nothing, plus I made sure he
was checking hidden & subfolders & that all files, hidden & system files were
allowed to show. And yes that was the 1st thing I made sure he did, was to
install not only anti-virus software, but anti-spyware & a firewall.

Thanks for your help with this. I do appreciate it!

So, maybe backup a bit and tell us what exactly the problem is:

1. Is Automatic Updates enabled?

2. Is he able to access Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)?
If not, could he *ever* access Windows Update?

3. If so, does Windows Update offer him any updates now? Can he
successfully install the updates via Windows Update?

Post any error messages in their entirety. (And it'd probably be best if he
posted here himself, if possible, instead of you.)

Here are what may be some helpful references:

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906602

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.
