Please be more specific when you say "you cannot get them to
work"...Cannot get them to work how? Are there any error messages? Is
the install not working, or is the software not working after installing?
Might I also suggest trying XAMPP (it's vista compatible and has all the
components you need rolled into one package):

I use XAMPP to run our company's intranet and it works great for me and
is easy to administer. It was also easy to install.
