I'm in Vista now but I can hop back over there. I'd double-click my
shortcut and nothing would happen. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling,
still nothing. I mentioned the lifecam only because it is linked with Live
Messenger 8 and its control panel wouldn't intialise either. Reinstalled
that too.
I'll mosey on over to my XP partition right now and see what's what, by
which time this post should have appeared.

Greetings,

In that case, you will have to download WinRar to open the .rar attachment.

RAR is the native format of WinRAR archiver. Like other archives, RAR files
are data containers, they store one or several files in the compressed form.
After you downloaded RAR file from Internet, you need to unpack its contents
in order to use it.

You can download WinRar from: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

Once downloaded, run the setup, and then, try to open the .rar file in the
attachment. The .rar file contains a .reg file which you need to double
click on and select "Yes". Once completed, restart Windows Live Messenger.

Tell me if that helps at all.

Didn't make any difference. I see 2 X msnmsgr.exe running in Task manager,
but using no CPU space. Strange.

Greetings,

Push, CTRL+ALT+DELETE and end both process trees for msnmsgr.exe, to do
this, click on Processes, scroll down to msnmsgr.exe, and right click on it,
and select End Process Tree. Do this for both msnmsgr.exe processes that are
running, then restart Messenger again.

Well of course that won't do anything because changing application policies are useless when
the application won't even start.

It sounds like its gotten deadlocked, kill both processes and then just try executing
Messenger once again.
