Can't get into the WindowsUpdate Chat -- MVP please ask!

If anybody is reading this who *can* get into the Chat (I've been
trying for 15 minutes starting at 1:00 p.m. EST), please ask:

We have a Windows XP load set. We had it previously set to "download
and notify" the updates. Said load set had *all* Windows updates
(including the "optional" updates) from "Windows Update". This worked
fine.

We updated this to SP2 when it was available and left the new
"automatically update at 3:00 a.m." setting on.

Last week, when the two .NET updates were visible in the "high
priority" section of Windows Update, we assumed they would
automatically download and install at 3:00 a.m.

They have not.

We *can* manually download and install them. So WinUpdate v.5 *is*
working.

But the "automatic" seems not to be working.

Nobody in the University of Michigan community seems to have these
updates automatically installing so...

1) Why are these updates not installing "automatically"

2) Were they put in the wrong category and should be "optional" -- and
that's what's going on here?

3) Something else? (IE, SP2/WinUpdate v.5 is "broken"?)

If somebody could ask this who *can* get into the Chat, it would be
appreciated!

- Steve

Hi

Take a look in %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log for a
history listing (note that the text goes pretty far out to the right).

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

Do you have any activity in that log file?

Lots of activity.

But nothing indicating that the .NET updates should be installed.

but rather than ask me this question, answer one for me...

Did *YOU* get the two .NET updates to automatically install after you
installed SP2?

Hi

No, because I don't use Automatic Updates.

Well -- and I'm not meaning to be rude -- then your response wasn't
terribly helpful here.

*Should* everything in the "high priority" section of Windows Update
automatically update?

If not, then why are the .NET updates listed in "high priority"?

(This is -- by no means -- limited to one computer. I've checked
across campus and it's the exact same behavior all around...)
