Have two computers that I have updated with SP2. The first an Athlon
2400 system that I built updated to SP2 without a hitch. The second I
have tried to update twice and rolled back after being unable to access
the internet. Both are connected to Comcast Cable Internet by way of a
router. I have used system restore to undo the SP2 installation for the
one that I keep getting the error message that says unable to get IP
address. I also disconnected both the Panda AV firewall and Windows
firewall when I tried to access. While I am comfortable with my
protection under SP1 the way I have things configures, I wonder if
anyone might have a solution to my problem the the computer that is not
able to get internet access with SP2. There is nothing of major
difference that I can tell between the two computers. Both connected to
Comcast Cable. Thanks in advance.

Bring up a command prompt, (Start> Run> "cmd"), then type "ipconfig" and hit
"Enter". What IP address do you get for the network adapter that's connected
to Comcast?

Bob. Looks like your router's internal IP address is 192.168.0.1(a.k.a. your
gateway), and that DHCP on the router is giving you an address of .100.
That's all pretty normal looking for a small home network.

The point is, you are getting an IP address and I'm guessing what you really
mean is that you can't browse the internet. If you've taken all the
firewalls out of the equation (meaning the new SP2 firewall) it's hard to
understand why. Is your router's internet signal light on? If you plug
straight into your cable modem with the SP2 computer do you have the net?

If that doesn't do it, can you ping something on the internet? Bing up a
command prompt again and type "ping www.yahoo.com". You should get 4 replys.
If that doesn't work, ping 66.94.230.49. That is one of yahoo's IP
addresses. If you can ping that but not the URL, then we know it comes down
to DNS.

These are the results after having rolled back to SP1. I will try later
to reinstall SP2 and see what I get.

Thanks,
Gregg

OK, thought you were still in SP2. Go to the command prompt after that and
see what you IP address is. If your computer can see your router, it should
start with a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx.
