The problem is that the Sigma Tel have been taken over by a company named
IDT who do not wish to develop or support the audio drivers. Microsoft have
said that they will release a patch to enable SP1 to work with the
problematic (and ubiquitous) Sigma Tel drivers although I don't know when.
Is either of your machines a Dell? I have a Dell Precision laptop with
Sigma Tel audio and the driver I have for it *is* compatible with SP1. I
can send it to you if you like but I only have the 64-bit version which may
not be suitable for your set up.
