When I go to the Windows Updates page, I never get further than the page that
says it's checking for the latest version of....NEVER goes farther than that.
How do I fix this problem so I can get updates?

Hi Diane,

You could try, control panel, add remove programs, look for verion of Java
program.

New version of Java should show a listing J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
update 2 117.00 MB

If you do not have this version get back to control panel right click Java
coffee cup click open, update tab, it will show you when it was updated, if
prior to the end of April 2005 select update. New update will install and
will appear in add remove programs. If this solves your issue you can safely
remove older version. Hope this helps.
Good Luck.

Older version Java2 Runtime Environment SE v 1.4.2_06 108.00 MB

Stan~I need to get an updated version of Java, but I don't have an 'update'
tab like you mentioned.

Hi Diane,

Give this a try..........

Go to Start>Run and key in:
net.exe stop wuauserv
Click on OK or hit ENTER

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wups.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 jscript.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 atl.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
net.exe start wuauserv

Now try the Windows Update site.

Alternatively, you could create a command script file to run the above
commands in a Command Prompt window......

Go to Start>Run
Key in:
cmd
Click on OK or hit ENTER

In the Command Prompt window, key in:
notepad registerit.cmd
Hit ENTER

A Notepad window will open with a dialogue box asking if you want to create
a new file. Click on Yes in the dialogue box.

Copy/paste the following, between but not including the asterisks, into the
Notepad window:

*********************
net stop wuauserv

regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll

regsvr32 /s wups.dll

regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll

regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll

regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll

regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

regsvr32 /s jscript.dll

regsvr32 /s atl.dll

regsvr32 /s softpub.dll

regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll

net start wuauserv
**********************

When finished pasting the above commands into the Notepad window, go to
File>Save then File>Exit.

Back in the Command Prompt window, key in:
registerit.cmd
Then hit ENTER

When the file is done running, and you're back at the C: prompt, key in:
exit
Then hit ENTER

Now try the Windows Update site.

Thank-you! Thank-you! Thank-you! I've been pulling my hair out ever since
XP SP2 came out since Windows Update and Automatic Updates stopped working
for me after installing XP SP2. I've been troubleshooting this problem for
many months. I tried your batch file tonight and Windows Update now works
for me! Amazing! Why isn't this information on the Windows Update
Troubleshooter or the Windows Update FAQ on Microsoft's site? It would have
saved me hours-and-hours of wasted time. Thanks again!
