cant get updates to work

after recently repairing my dodgy xp pro with a valid copy i cant get any
updates to download, i get a list to download , download it and it comes up
with the following updates were not installed, i dont even get an error
message..........help please!

Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation
