Can't initiate automatic updates

If I try to turn on automatic updates from the security center screen it
gives me the message "cannot change your automatic update settings, try to
change it using control panel...".
When I go to Control Panel...System...Auto Update tab, the selection is
grayed out and will not accept any changes.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
